The first in a best-selling, wildly successful 4-part series, Claudine at School was published in 1900 and is the story of a restless, clever and modern teenage girl. Though written by the revered French author Colette, it was her then-husband, the editor Henry Gauthier-Villars (better known by his pen name Willy), who initially took the credit and the byline for the sensational publication. The couple later divorced and Colette continued to write, establishing herself as a solo author and producing more than 50 celebrated works in her colorful lifetime. This first printing from 1957 is translated by Antonia White and wrapped in a pretty, eye-catching dust jacket. At the time of its publication, the recollections of a high-spirited, rebellious teenage girl (whom Colette based largely on herself) inspired fashions, plays and beauty products. This is an essential coming of age story by a French national treasure.

This book is sold in as-is vintage condition. There are small tears and losses to the spine of the dust jacket, now protected in a plastic sleeve. The pages are clean and the volume is well intact. Please see our detailed photos.
