- This photograph is part of "Island, Off Season," a series of images shot on a 6x7 medium format camera with black and white film, capturing Block Island during its quiet winter months. Of the series, McKendree writes: "I came to the island in the middle of winter, to walk the trails, beaches and empty roads with my Pentax 67 camera. I wanted to experience it in its slumber, to understand it more fully, with the human layer removed. What I found was an unmistakably powerful presence. The land is alive, with or without us."
