- Dimensions: 13” x 11” x .75” deep

- Luminous and romantic, this extraordinary example of nineteenth-century American folk art offers a compelling dialogue between darkness and light.

- This style is most commonly referred to today as "sandpaper painting:" a double misnomer. These works are actually drawings in charcoal or pastel on a surface that has been specially treated in marble dust to give it a sandpaper-like sparkle and tooth.

- Nineteenth-century artists generally referred to this technique as ""monochromatic painting"" to call out its emphasis on the single color black.

- Housed in its original gilt frame, this is a jewel-like work. Two other companion pieces are available here. An original hook is included on the top of the frame for hanging.

- This piece is in very good antique condition, showing signs of wear consistent with age and use. Please see our detailed photos.
