Paul Chidlaw, Framed Oil Still Life on Paper 11

We love the daring, vivid shades of turquoise, citron and carnelian in this still life oil sketch by the late Paul Chidlaw. With a palette like this and a loose, gestural hand, the artist imbues classic still life composition with fresh energy and a playful point of view. We matted this piece and framed it simply in natural wood. We think it's a total scene-stealer.

A student at L'École des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau during the 1920's, Paul Chidlaw had a varied and prolific career in the art world. He painted commissions for the WPA, became a revered professor at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and mentored luminaries like Tom Wesselmann and Jim Dine. He was also an early proponent of Abstract Expressionism. Chidlaw passed away in 1989.
