- Dimensions: 21.25" x 16.75"

- Oil on board, unframed

- A student work from the early 1970's, this color study is by an anonymous artist from Provincetown, Massachusetts' Cape School of Art.

- Beautifully composed and impressionistic, the emphasis here is on light and shadow, line and color. The piece includes a second, vibrant study on its back.

- The Cape School of Art was founded in 1899 by Charles Hawthorne, former assistant to Impressionist William Merritt Chase. As the first school to teach outdoor figure painting, it attracted many notable figures, including Childe Hassam, William Paxton, and Norman Rockwell.

- Renowned for its excellent instruction in one of the world's largest artist colonies, the institution continues to educate and inspire new generations of Cape artists.

- Student studies from this time period illustrate the school’s mission statement: “To educate the artist in the perception and use of color and light in representational painting.”

- This piece is in good vintage condition and is unsigned. Please see our detailed photos.
