- Undulating coastline, dramatic bluffs, and sturdy ferry boats comprise these lively, vibrant compositions. Merck writes, “When I made this series of pictures I sometimes used a boat as an observation dock: I looked back at land mass-at-sea, or over to headlands-meeting-river. And I also looked at the boat as a subject as it plied those same shores and channels. Sometimes the boat observed was a big white ferry which lumbers brightly back and forth through all kinds of seas. Using these industrial man-made notions, like green buoys, or ferries, or barges, and balancing them into these seascapes and landscapes became one picture-making challenge. The other was to create pictures out of the flotsam and jetsam that builds up in the creative compost of one’s studio– old palette papers, canvases, watercolors, blottings, printings, sandpaper, whatever surprised me, and give them new life, in reassembled collages.”
- Josie Merck lived in Mexico and Brazil as a child, growing up with a love of art and nature, color and celebration. She studied painting at Sarah Lawrence College and received her MFA from Yale University School of Art. She also attended Skowhegan School in Maine, the Art Students League, and SUNY, Purchase. She lives in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
